When shopping for a mattress, always make sure to test the mattress in the showroom as it is a big-ticket item
that will stay with you for years to come. To start, let's take an intimate look at some bare essentials
when picking a mattress.
Firmness is the bedding industry's term for stiffness. Firm and extra-firm beds are designed to provide support to the spine. Firmer beds are often a result of stiffer
padding and foam, and not necessarily higher coil counts or strength in the steel. A box spring or divan can
also add further firmness to a mattress. It’s therefore quite common for mattresses and divans to be sold as a
set since they are designed to work together for optimal support and
comfort.
Recent findings have recommended medium-firm mattresses for lower back pain as it’s able to best support the
spine at all points while allowing it to maintain its natural curve. Traditionally, those with lower back
pain often prefer beds that are firmer. A firmer bed prevents the low back
from sinking deeply into the bed and irritating the facet joints – joints that make our back
flexible, allowing us to bend and twist.
Sufferers of upper back and neck pain often prefer softer
bedding. The cushioning in the bed allows the head and thoracic area to sink into the bed, thereby
supporting the cervical area. Foam and padding are therefore good recommendations. Those with multiple
painful joints may choose bedding with cushioning that distributes body
weight. A quality mattress that provides the needed balance of cushioning with proper support for
the spine is an ideal combination. Our Berlin
mattress comes with a soft topper with a firm build underneath.
Side sleepers: Plush mattresses are often recommended as they maintain the natural shape of the spine and the
curves of the hips and shoulders while sleeping. Plush bedding cradles the
body and helps to distribute the weight of the body, reducing pressure points at the hips and
shoulders.
Stomach sleepers: Sleeping on the stomach on a soft bed can stress the thoracolumbar
spine. The weight of the belly and pelvis also compresses the bedding, and therefore a firmer mattress will
support the stomach, pelvis, and thoracolumbar areas.
A heavier set person might want to opt for pillow-top mattresses, which
have additional top layers of padding, such as regular, latex, or memory foam, and natural fiber fill, which
offers additional support with the extra cushioning between the body and the underlying coils or support
system.
Expect a decent mattress to come with at least a 10-year full replacement or non-prorated warranty. Non-prorated means a full replacement is given within the time period for any issues covered under the warranty. Do keep in mind that most warranties cover defects in materials and workmanship, but not the regular wear and tear from extended usage. Also, be sure not to remove the tag if that’s going to void the warranty. Using a mattress protector cover is a good idea as companies are not likely to take back a soiled mattress. All Makedon Mattresses come with a 15-year warranty.
